A US waiter says his faith in humanity has been restored after a diner secretly picked up the bill for a pair of strangers who he overheard receiving a devastating diagnosis.

“While waiting tables tonight, a mother and daughter started crying mid-meal,” the Boston-area waiter wrote in a Reddit post that is warming hearts across the internet.

“I had no idea what happened until a single guy at the table next to them handed me this note [seen to the right] with his bill. Faith in humanity, restored.”

HuffPost was able to contact the waiter who elaborated on what had happened. Although he didn’t know for sure that the two women were mother and daughter he tells the webiste he was “fairly certain.”

The women were seated at their table and had ordered when the younger woman, the daughter, took a cell phone call.

After she hung up both women began to cry. The waiter says that when he finished his meal, the single guy who had been sitting next to them, handed the waiter the billfold with his credit card and the note:

“Do me a favor and bring me their check too. Someone just got diagnosed. Don’t tell them.”

The waiter snapped a pic of the note before ringing up both bills on the man’s credit card. After the man had left the waiter told the mother and daughter he had paid for their meals. He tells HuffPost the mother was “overwhelmed with gratitude.”

It’s just another example of how important it is to keep everything that happens in life in perspective. You never know what the person sitting next to you is going through and an act of kindness just might make all the difference for them. Not only that, but remember our children are always watching us and doing things like this for others is, perhaps, the best way to teach them how to be good people. Show, don’t tell.
