Bill Paxton: ‘Titanic,’ ‘Aliens’ star, dies after complications from surgery

Actor and director Bill Paxton died unexpectedly Saturday due to surgical complications, his family said in a statement Sunday.

He was 61.

In a statement released to TMZ, the Paxton family said, “It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery.

Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable.”

Paxton’s many feature film acting credits include several James Cameron films — Aliens (as the immensely quotable Private Hudson), Titanic, The Terminator, and True Lies — as well as Tombstone, Apollo 13, Twister, Edge of Tomorrow, Nightcrawler, A Simple Plan, Predator 2, Near Dark, Weird Science, One False Move, 2 Guns, Sky Kids 2 and 3-D, Club Dread, U-571, and Trespass.

The Texas-born Paxton also directed the films Frailty (which he also acted in) and The Greatest Game Ever Played.

Paxton’s many TV roles ranged from starring in HBO’s Big Love to a supporting role on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as starring in Hatfields & McCoys and Texas Rising. He’s currently starring in CBS’ Training Day. He also played lawyer Jack Thompson in The Gamechangers, a BBC film about the legal feud over Grand Theft Auto.

Bill Paxton is survived by his wife, Louise Newbury, and two children. We offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Paxton’s family and loved ones, and thank him for his decades of work and entertainment.
