Cal Berkeley Football Player Ted Agu Dies

California junior defensive end Ted Agu, 21, died Friday morning after collapsing during a team conditioning work out according to the San Jose Mercury News. Agu, a former walk-on, was a back up defensive linemen who appeared in 12 games for the Bears last fall.

“When they got to the North tunnel he became unresponsive,” Dr. Batten said at a news conference on Friday, “emergency medical services were immediately alerted and high quality CPR was started and was carried out until emergency medical staff arrived.”

A defibrillator was used on Agu but he died later at a hospital. No information on the exact cause of death is available at this time. Agu’s college coach Sonny Dykes described the emotion on campus:.

“This is something that is very hard on all of us, certainly Ted’s family, his football family, the entire Cal community.”

Agu was a walk-on to the football team and a pre med student. He had just earned his athletic scholarship. Frontier coach Rich Cornford and former Frontier teammates talked about the moment he learned of Agu’s death.

“Our school secretary saw me and said Rich did you hear what happened,” Cornford told 23ABC, “I said no, she said Ted is gone. Catches you off guard, you never, ever think the strongest kid you knew, something like that would happen.”

“He walked on at Cal,” former teammate Justin Cash explained, “he had just earned his scholarship. All the hard work he put into it and now he’s gone.”
