Westgrove Elementary School students are remembering Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and his young son this Nov.11.

24-year-old Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was fatally shot last month at the National War Memorial.

The students in Westgrove School’s crochet club are about the same age as Cirillo’s son Marcus, and are doing what they can to offer help.

“I’d like to say I’m sorry for your father but I hope we can just make a difference and make you happy,” said student Autumn Ryden.

The group has made more than 400 poppies so far, raising about $750. Half of the money will go to the Cirillo family, and the other half to a local Legion.

Students are having trouble keeping up with demand for the poppies, and will continue making them until Monday.

But one poppy won’t be sold. Instead, it will be taken to Ottawa and placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
