A zoo in southern China says recently born panda triplets could be the only set of its kind to survive.

12-year-old panda Ju Xiao gave birth to the triplets on 29 July at the Chimelong Safari Park, in a delivery that took around three hours.

The park said all of the cubs were in good health and weighed 90 grams (0.2 pounds), 83 grams (0.18 pounds) and 122 grams (0.27 pounds).

Zhang He Min, Director of China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda, was confident that the three cubs would a survive.

There is only a one percent chance for a giant panda to give birth to triplets, according to Zhang.

A giant panda gave birth to three cubs last year, but only two survived.

The survival rate for panda cubs is 95 percent if they are still in good health 15 days after being born.

The gender of the panda babies will be known after one month.

The zoo said that they plan to show the pandas to the public in around four to five months time.

There are only around 1,600 wild pandas in the world.
