Before having children Alanna Gerwitz-Stern had never worked out and monitored her diet. When she had her first son, Jacob, in December of 2009, she could not seem to lose the weight she put on during pregnancy.
By the time she gave birth she had gained more than 100 pounds and reached 230 pounds for her 5’6″ frame. Embarrassed she hid the extra pounds with sweatpants and sweaters.
“I was embarrassed to even go to the gym,” Stern said, according to CNN. “I was so incredibly out of shape, and the people I was working out beside were so incredibly fit. I felt like a real eyesore when I would walk down the street.”
She managed to lose only 10 pounds on her own, but was determined not to give up.
“I just felt really down on myself,” she said. “I felt like there was so much more I was capable of, and I didn’t want to be one of those women who just accept their weight and that that’s their fate as a young mom. I felt like there was a better me.”
Stern signed up for Core Concepts, owned by Joshua Lipsey, who says that the idea behind the concept is to work your core, which improves posture and balance and decreases risk of injury.
Through body weight exercises like beggar’s planks, split and bicycle crunches, and lifestyle changes, Stern started to see improvements.
“If you think the hour that you go to the gym is what counts, it’s really not,” Stern stresses.
On top of going to core and plyometric classes for an hour a day six days a week, she ate more fruits and vegetables and less meat and lost the 106 pounds.
Stern ended up getting pregnant with twins shortly after, but by maintaining this healthier routine; she only gained 48 pounds and ended up losing it afterward by the end of the year. She is currently a size 4 and weighs 120 pounds, and now a busy mom with three kids, she continues staying active with Lipsey’s mobile app, Gym Tuck.
“I feel very, very lucky that I’ve been able to go through this transformation,” she said.
