A North Carolina church was surprised and “moved” when a homeless man donated his final 18 cents to the congregation.
CNN reported that the First United Methodist Church in Charlotte received an offering envelope with a note scribbled on the outside that read: “Please don’t be mad. I don’t have much. I’m homeless. God Bless.”
Inside the envelope were three pennies, one nickel and one dime.
The small gift made a big impact as the church’s pastor was so touched by the gesture.
“It took some bravery I think to write that down and say don’t be mad but ‘I’m homeless, God bless.’ But I still want to give,” said Pastor Patrick Hamrick. “And for us, we acknowledge that individual gave out of his poverty proportionally a big deal.”
WCNC noted that the man who gave so little, which meant so much, came forward on Thursday and left a voice message for Hamrick. The Pastor called back, reached him at a local soup kitchen and thanked him for his donation and his generosity.
