Dallas shooting: Snipers kill five police officers (Video)

Chaos erupted on the streets of Dallas Thursday night as multiple shots rang out during a protest, killing at least five police officers and critically wounding at least six others.

The shooting was the deadliest attack on law enforcement since Sept. 11, 2001, when 72 officers were killed.

The attack happened at about 8:45 a.m., Thursday night during a protest over deadly police shootings in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and suburban St. Paul, Minnesota.

Three people were in custody and one suspect was dead in the wake of the shooting.

It was not immediately clear if the deceased suspect killed himself or was shot by police.

Police in Dallas believe there were two shooters firing from elevated positions, possibly a nearby parking garage.

Some of the 11 officers were shot in the back, officials in Dallas said.

“Working together with rifles, (they) triangulated at elevated positions from different points in the downtown area where the march ended up going,” Dallas Police Chief David Brown said.

When the first shots were heard, demonstrators scattered, some injured in the rush to get to safety, officials said.

The area was cleared and downtown Dallas was sealed off.

At one point, police were negotiating with one suspect, who said there were bombs planted all over downtown and “that the end is coming and he’s going to hurt and kill more of us,” Brown said.

Police did not say if the deceased suspect was the person officers were trying to negotiate with.
