Comedian Tracy Morgan performs special show for medics who saved his life

Tracy Morgan brought his “Picking up the Pieces” comedy tour to the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey on Saturday night, and used the show as an opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women who helped save his life following a deadly car accident in 2014.

Tracy Morgan spent several days in a coma after the crash, which left him with severe head trauma, a broken leg and ribs, and also rendered him temporarily blind. He was hospitalised at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and on Saturday (16Apr16), he returned to the town’s State Theatre for a stand-up gig, where he had invited the caregivers who treated him after the collision.

“Last night was one of the most special nights of my life,” he told People.com on Sunday (17Apr16). “To be standing on stage with the people that saved my life in the audience was an overwhelming experience. I will never fully be able to thank the doctors, nurses, first responders and everyone else that got me back on that stage enough.”

“These people are heroes and I love them all from the bottom of my heart,” he continued. “The only good thing that happened on that horrible night was that I was close to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital when the accident happened. God Bless them all.”

Following the show, Tracy called on the crowd to honour the medical personnel with a standing ovation and also invited the hospital staff backstage to take pictures.

“After the sold-out show, Tracy asked for the house lights to be turned on and requested all those who helped save his life to share his standing ovation with him,” a friend told the publication. “It was a very emotional night.”
