Former Quebec health minister Claude Castonguay is calling on Yves Bolduc to resign from government and refund $215,000 in premiums he received for taking on new patients he then subsequently abandoned after he became a minister again.
Bolduc received the extra payments when he stepped up his practice after the Liberals were relegated to the Opposition in 2012. He eventually made more than $200,000.
The Journal de Montreal says the Health Ministry is checking the files of 20 doctors who also raked in bonuses – and they may be asked to give some of that money back.
The program had been put in place by Bolduc when he was health minister, to encourage physicians to accept new patients at a time when the shortage of general practitioners was severe.
Bolduc insists he did nothing wrong but says he will reimburse the province if the ministry demands it.
