A New Jersey couple captured video of five bear cubs and their mother playing in a backyard pool while the couple’s daughter offered perturbed commentary.
“I thought they would get a drink or just drink out of it for a minute and then move on, but they pretty much started climbing,” said resident Tim Basso. “My first thought was really, where is the dog and where are the kids?”
With everyone safely inside their house, Basso’s wife recorded video of mama bear and her family of five cubs.
“They’re definitely cute. They’re fun to watch, in retrospect, but while it was happening mostly I was just disappointed,” said Basso.
He called 911 and officers arrived, but there was little they could do. The bears continued to cool off and check out the swings and other toys.
“They came in, they experienced the pool, they got in it, they seemed to enjoy themselves, did a little bit of damage on the pool toys and floats and what not, but all in all I don’t think it was a terrible experience,” said Basso.
The mother bear and her cubs stayed for nearly an hour.
Basso said if the bears return to his family’s backyard, he’s just going to grin and bear it.
“This specific situation was anything but normal. This was weird,” said Basso.
