As expected, the Jets have released veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie.
Cromartie tweeted Sunday afternoon what sounded like a farewell. A source then confirmed the Jets had told his camp of their intentions. The team made a formal announcement a few minutes later.

The Jets released a statement in which coach Rex Ryan thanked Cromartie for his contributions to the team and said, “I wish him and his family the best.”
Cromartie had indicated in recent months that he expected to be released for cap considerations, but had made it clear he wanted to remain with the Jets.
The Jets could pursue Tennessee free-agent corner Alterraun Verner to fill the vacancy.
This move is believed to put the Jets about the $30 million under the cap, and they could get to close to $50 million under if they cut quarterback Mark Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes.
Cromartie, who had a $14.98 million cap charge for 2014, was acquired by the Jets from San Diego in a March 2010 trade. He played well that year, finishing with three interceptions and 17 passes defended, and then re-signed shortly before training camp in 2011 to a four-year, $32 million deal.
He played in the Pro Bowl after each of the last two seasons, despite slumping in 2013 after a stellar 2012 campaign. He was plagued by hip and knee injuries last season.
