The spread of zebra mussels in Lake Winnipeg has extended to its north basin, with the invasive aquatic species now found near George Island.
A joint program between the province and Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium continues to collect samples and monitor the lake in the fall.
Of 24 samples collected, one zebra mussel in the larval state was found in one sample southeast of George Island.
The invasive aquatic species is present in Lake Winnipeg, the Manitoba portion of the Red River, and Cedar Lake immediately west of Grand Rapids.
Boat owners are urged to be diligent to stop the spread of zebra mussels.
Under the federal Fisheries Act, it is illegal to possess or transport zebra mussels and can result in fines or prosecution.
