A statue of Bolshevik revolutionary Vladimir Lenin in Ukraine’s Odessa has been converted into a monument to Darth Vader — the city’s response to a law requiring the eradication of Communist Party symbols.

The new Sith Lord statue — the first known of its kind — sits outside a factory in Odessa, which has been the site of clashes between Russian-backed separatists and pro-Ukraine forces.

It had been commissioned for destruction, but was instead remodelled by Alexander Milov, an artist who was also featured at Burning Man. He even made Vader functional — building a router into Vader’s head to provide the area with Wi-Fi.

Trading one dark lord for another is yet another example of the country’s strange fascination with Darth Vader.

Last year, someone dressed in full costume submitted the required paperwork and 2.5 million hryvna (about $250,000) to run as Darth Vader for president. He didn’t win.
