A 580-pound swordfish was caught by Tasmanian fishermen after a six-hour tug-of-war in Australian waters.

The enormous fish was hauled in by 17-year-old Kyle Longmore, part of Team Choonachaser who were competing in the Coles Bay Classic fishing competition on Australia’s East Coast.

It took the team six hours to grapple with the swordfish before they finally managed to pull the marine creature aboard their boat.

After weighing the huge creature, it is though that the fish weighed 88.5kg (13st) more than the current swordfish record.

Leo Miller, Team Choonachaser’s leader, told The Examiner: “We had t about 50 metres away from the boat for three house, it was just a matter of trying to get it close enough to pull on board.”

The team also managed to net a 188kg (29st) swordfish this month, which would have also broken the Australian record before this catch.
