It has been a day of turbulent, and sometimes dangerous weather across southern Ontario — reaching in a band travelling from Lake Huron to Lake Ontario, between London — and Barrie. Several storm fronts passed through the area bringing high winds, hail, lightning, heavy rain and — in at least one case — a tornado. This is the aftermath of a powerful twister that touched down in the Angus community tonight.

Photographs posted on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook show damage to roofs and walls of houses.

“We’ve got a pretty big swath of destruction which appears to have taken place,” said OPP Sgt. Peter Leon.

Environment Canada had issued tornado warnings for several communities in the area.

The weather agency says a line of severe thunderstorms with several embedded tornadoes was moving into the Lake Simcoe region.

Environment Canada says the storms were bringing wind gusts of over 100 kilometres per hour and large hail was likely.

As of 7 p.m. Tuesday, all tornado warnings have been dropped across southern Ontario.
