Woman Bitten By Shark Off Melbourne Beach (Video)

A 38-year-old woman on a family trip to the beach was attacked by a shark Thursday morning off Brevard County.

Brevard Ocean Rescue officials say the attack happened near Ponce de Leon Park on Melbourne Beach.

According to Brevard County Fire Rescue, the woman suffered a wound to the leg from an apparent shark bike. She was was transported by ground to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida.

Florida had the most, and nearly half (23) of all unprovoked shark attacks in the United States in 2013, according to the International Shark Attack File. Within Florida, Brevard County had the second highest number of shark attacks.

ISAF says geographically adjacent counties located on the central east coast, just east of Orlando, have collectively recorded more than one-third (37%: 257 of 687 cases) of the entirety of Florida’s shark-human interactions to date.
