Woman beaten on wedding night because husband couldn’t take dress off

A woman was beaten by her new husband on their wedding night – because he couldn’t take her dress off, a court heard.

Amy Dawson was left fearing for her life after the attack.

The accountancy student married her long term partner, Gavin Golightly in August in County Durham last year.

The newlyweds, who have a child together, had a reception at a country hotel where they were due to stay the night.

As they returned to their room, Amy, 22, asked the groom to help her take off her dress but Golightly, 29, refused.

He then threw her to the floor before subjecting her to a terrifying assault, leaving her with a cut eyebrow and a bruised face and chest.

Prosecutor Sarah Traynor described the horrific attack carried out on the night of the couple’s wedding.

She said: ‘At 12.55am, the following morning, they went to their room, which she was helped towards by a night porter.

‘The defendant then tried to undo Ms Dawson’s dress. She received a crochet (to undo the dress with), but the defendant then refused to undo his new wife’s dress.

Amy, a mum-of-one, said: ‘When I first met Gavin, he was lovely, I couldn’t fault him.

‘He was caring and loving, and when we found we were having baby, we were delighted.

‘I fell pregnant after eight months, but almost straight away, Gavin became controlling and manipulative. It was like walking on eggshells.

‘When he lashed out at me on my wedding night, I thought I was going to die. I was terrified. He looked like he was going to kill me.’

    1. knowing he was like this why would you even marry him? is it because you had a child together and that child needed a father? that’s not a good reason anymore

    2. Sad that this tool jerk became that violent. Also sad is that I am sure he had a history of this type of violence and this poor woman had to marry his tool for whatever reason. But it doesn’t fit that this would be the first experience of violence.

    3. SHE SAW THE SIGNS (CONTROLLING, MANIPULATIVE, AND HAVING TO WALK ON EGGSHELLS) PRIOR TO MARRYING HIM AND I DON’T THINK THIS IS THE FIRST TIME HE STRUCK HER.

    4. Anull his ass! It’s a good thing you found out on the wedding night instead of 20 years later

    5. Well I sure hope you left his A@^$#^$ and arranged for an enullment!
