The White House is finally on the solar grid, in response to prodding by environmentalists and nearly four years after then-Energy Secretary Steven Chu pledged that solar panels and a solar water heater would be installed on the historic building’s roof.
Energy Department Secretary Ernest Moniz said in the video that the solar panels sent an important message about the prominent place of solar energy in America’s energy future.
Cyrus Wadia, assistant director for clean energy and materials research and development at the White House Office of Science and Technology, said in the video all the components for the solar array were made in America.
“It serves as a symbol that American technology in solar is available and reliable and ready for millions of Americans across the country,” Wadia said.
The last time solar panels were on the White House wasduring the presidency of Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s.
