Storm Warning : Accumulations of 5-10 inches

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the region from noon Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, including all of Rockland County. The National Weather Service predicts 5 – 10″ of snow (updated prediction 5 a.m. Tuesday), beginning late morning/around noon, with the heaviest snow falling between the evening commute and midnight. The snow should be out of the area by Wednesday morning.

TIMELINE AND IMPACTS

TUESDAY AFTERNOON INTO TUESDAY EVENING: Snow will start to spread across the area, likely falling during a good part of the evening commute. Because the temperatures will be very cold, snow could coat the roads very quickly. Use caution on the drive home from work….especially if you are driving near the coast. For areas north and west of I-95, the commute may not be affected as much because of lighter snowfall rates. Stay tuned for changes….how far the heavier snow makes it up to the north is still a very uncertain part of this forecast.

TUESDAY OVERNIGHT: The heaviest of the snow will likely come down between 10PM on Tuesday and 6AM Wednesday morning. Winds will also be strong, leading to blowing and drifting snow, and also brutally cold wind chills.

WEDNESDAY MORNING: The heaviest of the snow should end just before or during the morning commute. Because there is still some uncertainty with the timing, we should at least prepare for the possibility of a tough morning commute. If the storm moves out a little faster, than most of the commute may end up being OK. However, people that are outside clearing off snow or shoveling snow should use caution as wind chills could be below zero at times. Frost bite is always a danger in a situation like this.

Below is a look at our forecast accumulations as of Monday morning; even a small change in the storm track could drastically change this forecast….so stay tuned for updates.
