Santa Barbara Shooting : Gunman kills seven in drive-by shooting in California college town

At least seven people were killed, and seven more were wounded in a string of shootings carried out by a lone gunman on Friday night, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown confirmed at a news conference this morning.

The gunman, who investigators believe acted alone, drove a black BMW through the Isla Vista neighborhood, a student enclave located near the University of California, Santa Barbara, reported The Associated Press.

Witnesses described the terrifying scene.

“It’s crazy. That’s the last thing in Santa Barbara you expect to happen, especially in IV, because usually Santa Barbara and IV is like one of the safest cities and nice cities too, you know. And all of a sudden, you just hear about shooting and it’s something… I still don’t believe that it happened,” Isla Vista Deli Mart Owner Mike Hassan said.

“All of a sudden, we hear like five really loud gunshots, and, originally, I thought that it was like fireworks or something because it was just so loud and we’re kind of used to these loud noises around here. And then, all of a sudden, a bunch of people from outside started running into the store and we’re all just like, ‘Take cover! Take cover!’ And everyone just comes pouring in,” University of California-Santa Barbara student Cayla Bergman said.

“Loud things happen all the time, but then when people started running in and getting down and huddling in corners, then that’s when I was like, ‘This is real,'” Santa Barbara City college student Derrick Poe said.

The suspect is among the dead.

He was found with an apparent gunshot wound.

It’s unclear if he killed himself or if he was shot in a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies.
