Oil-Swishing Craze : Reality or Myth?

A new practice called “oil swishing” or “oil pulling” has gone viral on the internet in recent months; the technique claims to have a number of health benefits including whiter teeth, healthier gums, and even reduced asthma symptoms.

Oil pulling can be traced back at least 2,500 years to traditional type of Eastern Indian medicine, Ayurveda, in which practitioners “oil all the tissues of the body, from head to toe, every day. Studies have shown there can be an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action,” Marc Halpern, a chiropractor and president of the California College of Ayurveda in Nevada City, Calif., explains to HealthDay.

In an interview with HealthDay, Marc Halpern, a chiropractor and president of the California College of Ayurveda said, “In Ayurveda we oil all the tissues of the body, from head to toe, every day. Studies have shown there can be an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action.”

Halpern added that he has seen positive results in many people. Some have even reported better results in eczema with coconut oil.

In March, Discovery reported that oil pulling technique has been gaining more followers as it can treat insomnia, chronic pain, gingivitis, bad breath, kidney ailment and meningitis as well.

Typically, it is recommended to swish oil in the mouth for 10-15 minutes with one teaspoon or two, as per choice. Some people also find it beneficial to massage oil on their gums in case of pain. Sesame oil, almond oil and coconut oil are suitable for the technique.

The American Dental Association spokeswoman Lydia Hall said that study is needed to clarify the health benefits of oil swishing.

There is no medical proof regarding the benefits of the technique. However, there is not harm in trying it as well. Many people report good results.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Bob Kuska informed that the organization has not carried out any study related to benefits of oil pulling.
