‘Off-the-Grid’ Parents Lose Custody of 10 Children for Now

‘Off the grid’ Parents returns to court in fight to regain custody of 10 children.

Joe and Nichole Naugler both pleaded not guilty to criminal charges.

Nichole Naugler is charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Authorities said they had a court order last week to remove the Nauglers’ 10 children, after the state determined their living conditions were unsafe.

We’re now learning from court documents, when authorities conducted a traffic stop with Nichole, she told her kids to keep the doors locked. Police say the kids had to be physically removed.

Court records also show Joe Naugler faces a menacing charge for threatening a woman with a gun after trying to get water from a well on her property Sunday. That woman’s lawyer says she has now received death threats.

“The only statement we want to make is that we ask that everyone keep us and our family and our children in their prayers as we go through a very difficult time, that’s all please,” said Joe Naugler after court Tuesday.

The Nauglers say they live off the grid, not relying on municipal utilities, home-schooling their children, using only a generator for power and sleeping in what they call an open cabin.

During a private custody hearing Monday, a few people stood outside of the courthouse to support the family.

“I question when people are asked to do something on an accusation,” said Johnny Embry.

But neighbors told WLKY what they’ve seen is disturbing. They didn’t want to talk on camera for fear of retaliation, but they wonder what’s going on behind all of the family’s “no trespassing” signs.

    1. Wait. They’re suspicious because this family has no trespassing signs on their own property? The AUDACITY of some people to want others to stay off their land??? Sheesh! They have a right to protect their home, don’t they?? I don’t understand the part about the water well. was that someone else’s well? Other than that, this family has the right to protect their home and their kids the best way they see fit, and nobody should be allowed to arrest them for being off the grid. Sad.

      • The man and two of his children went onto the woman’s property to take water from her well. When she asked them to leave, the man cussed her out and threatened her with a knife and told one of his sons to go get a gun from the glovebox. When he was leaving he told the woman ” I know where you live. I will be back.” The neighbor filed a complaint and that is why the sheriff went to the property, to investigate the complaint. The woman reports that she is now receiving death threats.

    2. I found another link that showed the family’s living conditions. Absolute squalor, the animals lived better than the kids. I’m no fan of CPS but think that removing the kids might be justified in this situation.

    3. The family has a Facebook page. So..I assume they are stealing not just water from their neighbors, but Wifi? Oh..they are self sufficient all right. Just like any common thief is.

I trust the judicial system and its administrators (the police who served the warrants and the judge who arraigned the parents), and hope the system will serve the public interest. Read the article, Rebecca, and figure out who needs to leave WHOM alone. Seriously, study the constitution: it is a public document
