Montana triple homicide: people found dead in Belfry “Report”

Police are investigating what they say is an apparent triple homicide after discovering of three bodies inside a home Thursday in a tiny community in southern Montana, officials said.

Sheriff Josh McQuillan said that a male suspect has been identified, although he is not in custody and believed to have left the area. Officials said they do not believe there is any threat to the Belfry community.

All three of the victims are adults. They were found in a residence at the corner of Iron Rail Alley and State Street in Belfry.

Deputies responded to the residence Thursday for a welfare check at about 6:30 a.m., where they located three bodies. The suspect was not among the dead.

According to a press release issued Thursday afternoon by the Montana Department of Justice, the person who requested the welfare check had not heard from the people in the house since Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon, several streets were blocked off with crime tape. McQuillan would not release the identity of the victims until family has been notified.

But a nearby resident, Cynammon Mitzel, said she knew one of the victims.

“I knew one of the gals,” said Mitzel. “She worked across the street from us at the hospital in Red Lodge.”

Mitzel is a nurse at the Red Lodge Billings Clinic.

The community of Belfry has a population of only about 300 people. Mitzel described the town as a place where “everyone knows everyone.”

She said that’s why the gruesome crime is so hard for her to believe.

“You hear of it in bigger cities, but not little Belfry,” said Mitzel. “Up until now, have we ever locked our doors. I will now.”

“It’s been routinely, a very quiet place,” said McQuillan. “We have the normal small town stuff we deal with but never anything like this.”
