Michigan SUV crash leaves Four dead

A crash early Friday on an icy roadway in western Michigan left four dead and five more injured, Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler said.

The crash was reported shortly after 6 a.m. Friday in Muskegon County’s Casnovia Township.

The victims are identified as:

Erika Ceja, 34; Angelica Magana-Ceja, 44; Teresa Alvarez, 34, and Jessica Magana 22, all of Newaygo.

Gregory Funck, an off-duty nurse, and an off-duty Grand Rapids detective stopped at the scene and assisted the victims. The Grand Rapids Police Department says the detective is a 17-year veteran who was on his way to drop off his children at school when he came upon the accident. The officer, who wants to remain anonymous, performed CPR and helped organize rescue efforts.

Funck says he first arrived on scene and help coordinate efforts to perform CPR on the victims. He says three were thrown from the vehicle and another was trapped inside. He said the victim in the car had a broken leg. He removed his shirt and used it to stabilize the injury.

All of the passengers in the SUV and pickup truck were heading to work at the time of the crash.
