Kevin Abosch, 46, confirmed he had sold the photograph of an organic potato shot on a black background to an unnamed European businessman.

Kevin Abosch sold the 162x162cm print to a European businessman, who had inquired about buying it when he saw it in the photographer’s home in Paris. Mr Abosch told the businessman, who wants to remain anonymous, that the price was non-negotiable at $1.5 million.

He photographed the potato at his Dublin home in 2010 and made three prints of it. “I see commonalities between humans and potatoes that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species. Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted. I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience.”

One of the prints is in Mr Abosch’s private collection, another was donated to an art museum in Serbia and the third was sold to the businessman.

Kevin Abosch photographed the Faces of Ireland series at Dublin Airport, which consists of 250 portraits.

He is also the founder of discreet communication platform Kwikdesk, and OneOne, an ultra-private messaging app providing seven channels of discreet text messaging.
