After 7+ years as the Daily Show’s “Senior British Correspondent,” John Oliver was given an emotional sendoff during his final episode last night. Jon Stewart apparently tricked him into thinking they were doing a bit on “royal nuts,” and instead pivoted on air into a retrospective of Oliver’s tenure on the show. And Stewart made Oliver’s stiff upper lip get all quivery in the process. Watch the teary farewell below.
And here was the moment of zen:
According to the L.A. Times, Oliver joined the show in 2006 and quickly became a standout correspondent taking on diverse subjects with remote pieces from the Repuiblican National Convention, South Africa and Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration. Despite his success, he was never shy about throwing his sophisticated humor to the wind and getting into a Dickensian British character for some guaranteed laughs, a part of the comic’s repertoire that Stewart even highlighted in his video tribute.
