Husband in Coma Awakes After Wife Declines to End Life Support.

A newlywed wife’s decision to not allow doctors to take her comatose husband off life support turned out to be the right one, thankfully, when the husband woke up.

Danielle Josey Davis had been married to husband Matt Davis only seven months when a shattering motorcycle accident in 2010 left him in a coma and on life support.

After a bleak diagnosis from medical professionals, Danielle Josey Davis decided to keep her husband alive on life support and fought to take him home. Her husband’s parents could not care for him, his mother was ill and his father had passed away two years before the 2011 accident.

Danielle Josey Davis brought her husband to her mother’s house.

“If we’ve got to bring him home, let’s make sure he has the best view in the world,” she said she had told her mother.

When Matt Davis awoke he had no recollection of his wife. He still does not remember anything about her before the accident, even their wedding, but he said “I’m sure glad I married her.”

Danielle Josey Davis helped her husband through his recovery. She remembered when he first started communicating by following people with his eyes, she said.

A huge milestone occurred three months after the accident as she held Matt up in his bed just as his therapist had done and asked him to reach out and grab a toy.

He’d never done it before, but this day, he did it, she said.

She also knew her husband’s personality was still there when he was asked what he wanted to eat and he responded in a faint whisper.

“I kid you not, he says, ‘buffalo chicken wrap from Cheddar’s,'” she said. She knew it had been his favorite food. “We all whipped around because we all knew what he said.”

After another two months of rehabilitation her husband left on his own two feet with a walker, she said.

He doesn’t remember dating or marrying his wife so he had to get to know her all over again.

“Our relationship, our wedding day, all of that is gone but his new short term memory is outstanding,” she said.

The couple enjoy scrabble and yoga classes, and he’s recently started driving a stick shift car for fun because he loves cars, Danielle Josey Davis said.

Since Matt Davis’ insurance will no longer pay for his therapy now three and half years after his accident, Danielle Josey Davis has asked for support on GoFundMe so the couple “can live a full life”.

    1. My husband always jokes with me when I’m sick or just cough or sneeze, and
says pull the plug, cuz he’s my beneficiary and my health care power of
      attorney!

    2. I practically cried when I read this. What a powerful and loving story! I do wish the both of you the best of happiness in your future.
