A father is feeling a flood of emotions after his wife, who is in a coma, delivered a healthy baby boy.
West Nathaniel Lande was born Thursday at five pounds, nine ounces.
The father, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Lande, is relieved because doctors were not sure the baby or the mother would survive the pregnancy.
The 39-year-old mother has been showing very small signs of recuperation such as a hand movement, eye openings, or a grin, but her prognosis is uncertain.
“I was just so happy to have a healthy baby, healthy son,” said Brian Lande, Carleton’s husband. “It’s a feeling of immense relief joy and immense sorrow for Melissa not able to be awake for it.”
“Ten weeks of heartbreak, pain and anxiety not knowing if we get to keep either of our family members,” Lande said.
“Our big benchmark was to get her to 28 weeks when the odds will be much more in Baby Boy’s favor,” he said on March 25 — 28 weeks and five days into the pregnancy.
