A Chipotle Mexican Grill in State College shut down Wednesday after a note was posted on the restaurant referencing alleged poor working conditions.

Chipotle communications director Chris Arnold confirmed in an email that the restaurant had closed temporarily.

“Our Penn State restaurant was closed when a few employees quit, locking out a majority of others who are enthusiastic to return to work,” Arnold said.

“We expect the restaurant to reopen shortly.”

He did not say how many employees had quit, but said Chipotle would investigate the employee’s concerns.

“Any time our employees raise concerns about how they are treated, we absolutely look into that and take any corrective actions that are needed,” Arnold said.

“If there have been issues at this restaurant, we will fix them.”

A sign on the door Wednesday morning said, “Ask our corporate offices why their employees are forced to work in borderline sweatshop conditions. Almost the entire management and crew have resigned. People > Profits.”

The Daily Collegian captured video of a man who introduced himself to employees outside the restaurant as a Pittsburgh-area Chipotle manager and asked them to enter the store to discuss their concerns.

“I have to take the signs down. I’m here to listen to you guys no matter what. I have to take the signs down,” he said.

Calls to the Hiester Street restaurant were not returned.
