China earthquake leaves 300 injured, one dead : Report

A magnitude 6.4 quake has hit China’s southwestern province of Yunnan on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake’s epicentre was 163 km north-northwest of Yunjinghong and 10 km deep, the USGS said.

Homes have been destroyed but this time only limited casualties are reported in the quake. Conflicting sources put its magnitude at between 6 and 6.6. The epicenter, Jinggu county, is in a remote, largely rural and mountainous area.

State media said five people were killed and more than 20 injured, adding that numbers were likely to rise. It said tents, blankets and other relief materials were being delivered.

Earthquakes frequently strike in the region. About 600 people died in a 6.3 magnitude quake which hit another part of Yunnan in August.

Six years ago, a quake in Sichuan province, also in the southwest, claimed some 70,000 lives.
