David Hasselhoff has announced his engagement to girlfriend Hayley Roberts.
Speaking to Hello! magazine, the 63-year-old explained that he’d popped the question to Hayley, 36, during a romantic beachside picnic in Malibu.
Hasselhoff met Hayley when he was in Britain as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
The two fell in love and have been inseparable ever since, even appearing together in a documentary on their life.
In an interview in Hello!, Hasselhoff said: “I had a saying, ‘You don’t get married because you want to live with someone, you get married because you can’t live without them’.
“I felt that way. I knew that I was really unhappy without her. I waited to propose because I thought I was too old for her.”
He said last year they had not got married because he knew their’s was “not going to be a perfect relationship.”
Hayley said: “I genuinely had no idea he was going to do that. I’m still so overwhelmed.”
She said Hasselhoff had jokingly proposed to her a few times during their relationship hich began five years ago.
She added: “I thought he was just joking around at first. He’s asked me before, but it was never for real.
“Then he pulled out the ring. I cried so hard that he didn’t get around to actually asking, ‘Will you marry me?’ until about 10 minutes later.”
The age gap between them did not worry her, she told Hello!.
“I don’t want to miss out on being with someone I love because of what might happen down the line.”
Hasselhoff has been married three times and has two daughters with his previous wife Pamela Beach – Hayley and Taylor-Ann.
