Alberta : Renew your driver’s licence and sign up as an organ donor

You’ll soon be asked a new question when you renew your driver’s license.

Alberta Health Services and Service Alberta have teamed up to make it easier for you to sign up to be an organ or tissue donor.

Registry offices will soon provide you with the ability to give your intent on organ donations the next time you renew your licence. There will be a slight change to the way your licence will look as a new feature is being added. New licences will have a heart that shows you are a registered donor and Service Alberta Minister Doug Griffiths says this new feature will save lives.

By the end of June about half of registry agents will be on board, and all registries can provide the service before next April.

The province recently announced an online donation registry at the end of April and since then over 4,000 Albertans have registered to become donors.

According to Canadian Institute for Health Information data for 2012, Alberta reported the following active transplant waitlists

Heart: 23 patients
Lung (either a single or double lung): 67 patients

Liver: 106 patients
Kidney: 309 patients

Meanwhile work is ongoing to establish a single provincial agency to co-ordinate organ and tissue donations in Alberta.
