Since 2011, the New York State Government has spent more than $30 million trying to combat invasive plant and animal species. This week, state officials urge the public to join in the fight.
Invasive species come in many forms. They can be the zebra mussels we’ve heard about in Lake George. Spiny waterfleas that compete with small fish for food and various plants that upset the ecological balance because they don’t occur here naturally.
“Education and outreach is just so critical to change behavior and increase understanding about invasive species so we can protect New York’s resources,” said Hillary Smith of the Nature Conservancy.
Invasive species have become more of a problem in recent years because we’re a more mobile society. Boaters travel about. Ships pick up cargo on the other side of the earth and can drop off unwelcome visitors if everyone isn’t careful.
New York State now has new regulations that require visible soil and plants be removed from boats at state launches before and after entering the water. Boats must be dried and compartments emptied of water. Try to do it so the water doesn’t drain into the place you’re trying to protect.
