Pythons on loose in Quebec will not survive drop in temperature; Experts say

Two pythons are currently on the lam in Quebec and their survival is a race against Mother Nature as temperatures begin to dip in the coming weeks.

One python is missing from a town north of Montreal while another went missing from southwestern Montreal nearly a month ago.

One expert says it’s already pretty cold for the two fugitives and that their survival depends on them being found before the first frost, which typically comes in early October in Montreal.

“With the first freeze, (they’re) going to freeze, (they’re) not going to make it,” said Bry Loyst, curator at the Indian River Reptile Zoo near Peterborough, Ont. “If it doesn’t freeze to death it’ll catch pneumonia and die shortly thereafter.”

Typically, pythons have high body temperatures, and often, the main challenge for pythons is to keep cool rather than to warm up. Also, the body temperature in pythons is often above air temperature due to the active occupations and search for microhabitats, where the temperature is higher.

The pythons, known as royal or ball pythons, are typically kept as pets and are not considered dangerous.
