Mount Saint Helens dome-building eruption recalled

Ten years ago this week, Mount St. Helens started shooting steam and ash in the air. The eruption wasn’t as big as the 1980 blast, but over three years it built a second lava dome in the crater that rose to more than 1,000 feet.

The Daily News reports scientists with the U. S. Geological Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver are marking the 10-year anniversary of the event and the changes that have been made.

Although the volcano in southwest Washington has been quiet in recent years, scientists say the magma chamber below the mountain is recharging.
