‘Noah’ the movie, banned in Malaysia

The film ‘Noah’ has been banned and will not be screened in Malaysia as it was deemed insensitive to the local community.

According the the Film Censorship Board chairman Datuk Abdul Halim, the decision to ban the movie was as a “precaution” because any films related to Prophet Noah (Nabi Nuh) is considered as insensitive to the Muslim community.

Noah, known as Nabi Nuh in Islam, is recognised as one of the 25 prophets of God.

The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Russell Crowe, tells the story of the Biblical figure who undertakes a giant task of building an ark in preparation of a great flood.

Since last March, several Middle Eastern countries including Qatar, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates have stated they will not be screening the film in their countries.

According to foreign articles, Aronofsky had said that the Bible story was just an inspiration for the film.

Paramount, in its marketing materials, said that the film was a creative, rather than a literal adaptation, of the story after receiving criticism from church leaders in the United States.
