Tree branch kills man in popular Toronto park

Investigators are on scene of what appears to be a freak accident in Trinity Bellwoods Park.

A man and his wife were sitting under a tree when a branch fell on him and hit him in the head.

Although passers-by attempted to revive him with CPR, he succumbed to his injuries.

His wife has been taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Reports from the scene suggest that the man may have tried to shield his wife from the falling branch.

“First may I express my condolences,” said Mayor John Tory attending a TTC event July 18.

Tory said that he had been briefed by parks staff who have been investigating the mishap.

“The parks people are actively investigating, looking at the tree. But there was no reason to believe that the tree was in any condition for the accident to occur,” said Tory. “But the most important thing now is that we express our condolences to the family.”

Officers continue to investigate.
