A skier suffered serious injuries after falling approximately 1,800 feet along an avalanche near Banff Friday afternoon.

Early Friday afternoon, a skier was hiking in an out-out-bounds area outside of Sunshine Village when he walked onto an unstable cornice of snow overhanging a deep ravine on goat’s eye mountain.

“This caused the cornice to fail, and created a size-two avalanche,” said Parks Canada spokeswoman Tania Peters.

“He and the avalanche debris fell approximately 1,800 feet and was located on the surface of the avalanche.”

The skier, who suffered serious injuries in the fall, was transported by ground ambulance to Banff Mineral Hospital before being airlifted to Calgary by STARS.
