A Sherbrooke, Que., man was arrested in Florida on the weekend following an online sting centring on his belief he was going to the U.S. to meet a 14-year-old boy.
Federal prosecutors said Rene Roberge, 47, of Montreal, is facing charges of enticement of a minor and traveling to the United States with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. The charges carry a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence and potentially life behind bars.
Roberge made his first court appearance Monday in Fort Lauderdale.
According to the criminal complaint, Roberge traveled from Quebec to Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 9 after sending a message to an undercover Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent posing on a social networking website as a 14-year-old boy and his father interested in arranging a sexual encounter.
Prosecutors said Roberge made hotel reservations in Pompano Beach.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents said they found child pornography on Roberge’s iPad, and authorities said they found lubricant, condoms and gifts in his luggage.
Prosecutors said Roberge was arrested after admitting to traveling from Canada to have sex with someone he believed to be a teenager.
