OPP called in to investigate fatal traffic accident, Report

The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating the details surrounding the death of a young woman in a traffic accident that occurred in this province on the weekend.

A 22-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene about 1:25 a.m. Sunday after her vehicle left Bay Bulls Road in St. John’s and struck a utility pole.

RNC Chief Bill Janes says a patrol car was parked near Bigood’s Plaza when the officer inside spotted the suspect vehicle travelling at a ‘very high rate of speed’. Whether or not the officer was in pursuit at the time of the crash is part of the investigation.

Janes says the OPP have been tasked to determine what happened in the time between when the officer saw the vehicle and when the crash happened three kilometres down the road.

The investigation should also reveal if alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident. Janes called the death a terrible tragedy and expressed condolences to the family.
