One of two fugitive capybaras caught

After 19 days on the lam, City of Toronto officials have captured one of two capybaras that broke out of the High Park Zoo – an escape that set the city abuzz and inspired all manner of jokes on social media.

“With a big team effort one of the capybaras has been rescued. It is resting off site for now,” Ward 13 Coun. Sarah Doucette wrote on Twitter.

The two capybaras – a male and a female – escaped from the High Park Zoo May 25 as they were being brought to join one other capybaras capybara who lives at the zoo and the two have been on the loose ever since.

The Zoo did not immediately say where exactly the one animal was found or how staff were tipped off to its presence.

The hunt for the missing capybaras – large members of the rodent family – has intrigued park-goers and area residents. However it’s not the first time one of the zoo’s escaped residents has captured headlines. Last year, a peacock from the zoo escaped and was recaptured after darting around the Parkdale area for several days.

The fugitive capybara is now resting while the search for his companion continues.
