Montreal woman killed in attack by neighbour’s dog in Pointe-aux-Trembles

A 55-year old woman died Wednesday afternoon in the backyard of her semi-detached home in Pointe-aux-Trembles in what police said was a deadly attack by a dog.

Police received a 911 call at 5 p.m. saying a woman was unconscious in her backyard on Edgar-Prairie St. near Louis-Lefevbre St. Police said they had to shoot the dog, described as a pit bull, to allow paramedics to access the victim. The woman was then pronounced dead on the scene.

Police found several bite marks on the victim’s upper body.

Police say the animal belonged to a neighbor, who was questioned by police. Police described the owner as co-operative.

Charges are possible.

Meanwhile, the Montreal SPCA issued a statement Wednesday, saying they want to see the “best and most effective regulations considered in dealing with this issue.”

However, they say they won’t be backing legislation banning pitbulls, or any other breeds.

    1. These are vicious animals (except, sometimes, to their owners) who have been bred for attacking and fighting; the “pit” in their names refers to the dogfighting pit that they were bred to fight in. Now that dogfighting is illegal here, there is no need to keep these dangerous animals (some owners like to use them to intimidate their neighbours).
