Maria Digel won $6,986,491.90 on Lotto 6/49’s June 4 draw, playing the same numbers she’s played for 30 years.
“You, know, I had a dream the night before I won. I dreamed I won a million dollars and split it up among my family,” Digel said in a statement released by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.
“I would never even dream that I won this much! I always thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to win $100,000, wouldn’t that be wonderful?’”
Digel’s lottery numbers – 7, 11, 12, 13, 35 and 41 – are the ages of her family and the date they arrived when they immigrated to Canada decades ago.
She has played those numbers consistently, buying and checking her tickets at the Real Canadian Superstore at 2132 McPhillips St., when she buys her groceries.
“I checked it with the girl at the lottery counter, and she said, ‘You’ve won more than six million dollars.’ I just felt numb,” she said in the statement.
Digel said she intends to make her dream come true and divide her winnings among her family members.
“I’ll keep some for emergencies,” she said. “I live a simple life. I don’t need a fancy apartment. I am happy.”
