Luka Magnotta surveillance videos released (WATCH)

Police were unable to determine how a Chinese exchange student fell into the grip of his killer, Luka Rocco Magnotta, despite pouring over 7,000 photographs and computer files in the course of their murder probe.

The crown prosecutor finished its chief examination of Montreal police Sgt.Detective Claudette Hamlin who oversaw the crime scene.

Hamlin went through the final excerpts of video surveillance footage she started with last week. The video footage, taken from the building’s cameras, shows Magnotta during his final day in the building, coming in and out, and sometimes going to and fro throwing away more items in basement garbage bins. He still appears relaxed and calm, sometimes checking himself out in mirrors.

At 5:14 pm, Magnotta is shown leaving the building with a small carry-on suitcase and getting into a taxi.

Hamlin also described other footage taken May 18 when Magnotta is shown arriving late in the evening with a man who was never identified by police. They are shown leaving later the next morning. The stranger is believed to be the second man shown at the start of the so-called murder video.

Hamlin testified they were never able to determine how or why Magnotta and Lin met up.

Photos taken by Paris police were entered into evidence and shown to the jury.

Upon cross-examination, the defence asked the witness about several parts of her testimony, including whether they had determined where Magnotta got the infamous suitcase. Lin’s torso was found stuffed into a large canvas upright suitcase. Hamlin said they had not.

Defence lawyer Luc Leclair mentioned that the wig his client is seen wearing in the video footage cost $1700.

Leclair questioned Hamlin about what appeared to be Lin’s Skype account as well as Chrome downloads featuring the names of what sounded like X-rated films.

He also questioned her about four separate cell numbers his client activated and used between December 2011 and May 2012, as well as a 705 area code number he appeared to have called several times.
