Homeless suspect charged in three Winnipeg killings

The brother of John Ostamas, a suspect facing charges for the killings of three homeless men in Winnipeg, spoke out on Tuesday.

John Paul Ostamas has been charged with two counts of first degree murder in connection with two fatal assaults in the city over the weekend.

The 39-year-old also faces a charge of second degree murder in the death of a man who was fatally assaulted earlier this month.

According to police, 65-year-old Donald Collins was left for dead in an alley near Hargrave and Portage after he was attacked and murdered on April 25th. Several hours later, 48-year-old Stony Bushie was attacked and murdered in a parkade near Hargrave and Portage.

Meanwhile, 37-year-old Myles Monias was attacked and killed in a bus shelter on April 10th on Main Street near Pioneer Avenue.

Police report Ostamas was arrested and taken into custody as a result of an assault that is unrelated to the homicides. After officers interviewed Ostamas, charges were eventually laid based on security footage.

The 39-year-old is described by police as being “very transient.” Ostamas is originally from the Thunder Bay area but has spent time in Winnipeg on and off for the past 10 years. He has had very little contact with Winnipeg Police, with officers only dealing with him during the domestic assault that occurred in March of this year.

Investigators have learned that Ostamas has a record of multiple assaults in the Thunder Bay area dating back to 2002. Officers will be contacting police in other jurisdictions where Ostamas is known to have travelled.
