Toronto police have two young offenders in custody on charges of abduction, robbery, and lesser offences after a woman and her baby were allegedly attacked in Scarborough.
The incident happened around 11pm Thursday in the neighbourhoood of Guildwood Parkway and Livingston Road. A 14-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl are accused of trying to abduct the infant while robbing the woman.
After a struggle, the boy and girl ran off with the woman’s backpack.
The suspects may have robbed another woman of her purse earlier in the evening.
Police quickly took the girl into custody, but the boy fled, leading officers on a foot chase through backyards. He was arrested a few hours later in the same area where the alleged incident occurred.
Though the young age of the suspects is shocking to some, Staff Sgt. Peter Moreira said the crime is shocking regardless of their age.
“This is an otherwise good area,” Moreira said. “Obviously it’s disappointing for everyone involved.”
The baby girl suffered some bruises in the altercation.
Both mother and child were sent to hospital to be checked out but have since been released.
The suspects appeared in court on Friday morning facing multiple charges.
