Edmonton police officer facing assault charge

An Edmonton police officer has been charged with aggravated assault after an incident in March.

Just after 8 a.m. on March 8, 2014, an on duty EPS member responded to a complaint of an intoxicated man causing trouble and refusing to leave a Subway store located inside a Mac’s convenience store in Edmonton.

The officer had contact with the 45-year-old man that resulted in serious injury, said the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), called in to investigate the case.

No weapon was involved.

“As a result of this incident, the Affected Person suffered a significant complex facial fracture requiring hospitalization and surgery,” said a statement from ASIRT released Wednesday.

ASIRT executive director Susan D. Hughson received the completed investigation and upon reviewing it, forwarded the investigative file to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) for an opinion. After consultation with the ACPS and a careful review of the evidence, she confirmed there are reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed an offence.

After the officer was arrested and charged, he was freed on his own recognizance, including that he have no contact with the victim or any witnesses.

“As the nature of the contact between Cst. Briegel and the Affected Person will be the focus of any potential trial in this matter, and because the case is now before the courts, ASIRT will not provide any further information at this time relating to this investigation,” concludes the ASIRT statement.

The officer remains on duty in an administrative capacity.

Const. Sean Briegel is charged with one count of aggravated assault.
