Dead newborn found in Regina backyard, police say

Police in Regina are investigating, along with the provincial coroner’s office, after the body of a newborn infant was discovered in a backyard earlier this month.

At 3:30 p.m. that day, police were called to the yard of a residence in the 700 block of Retallack Street for a report of a deceased infant.

There, they found the remains of a dead baby boy who appeared to be newborn.

Officers secured the area and requested the assistance of the provincial office of the coroner.

Police have since identified the baby’s mother.

“We were able to establish relatively early who the mother of the infant is,” Regina Police Service spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich said Thursday evening.

Investigators believed from the outset there was no danger to the public, she added, and “so there wasn’t a need to notify or alert the public immediately.”

Police said Thursday there are no other details to release, but the investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
