A baby was rescued from a locked minivan Sunday afternoon, after police couldn’t find his parents.
A passerby noticed the situation and called police to the scene at College and Summer streets in Halifax at 3:30 p.m.
Staff Sgt. Greg Mason said the one-year-old boy was inside a car seat and appeared to be quite upset.
“The officers that went there believed that he was in distress.”
Officers checked the area but could not find any adults in connection with the child and vehicle. So, they smashed through a window to free the boy, who was then medically cleared by Emergency Health Services paramedics.
“We did find a parent a short time later,” Mason said.
Although the boy’s condition appeared fine, Mason said Department of Community Services staff determined he should be examined at the IWK Health Centre.
Mason would not provide any details to explain how the child was left unattended.
“It’s still under investigation right now and it will be a joint investigation between Community Services and us.”
He said the government agency will determine if the boy will be returned to his parents. In addition, he said the parents would get some advice from Community Services.
“They also want to make sure that down the road, something like this doesn’t happen to this family again.”
